Ridership Surges, Train Fleet Ages: LRT-2 seeks P12.8B for New Commuter Trains.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) are seeking the restoration of P12.8 billion in funding for additional LRT-2 trainsets as surging passenger demand overwhelms an aging fleet, forcing authorities to consider deploying buses along the railway corridor.

LRTA Administrator Hernando Cabrera told Malaya Business Insight in a telephone interview Wednesday that Congress had removed the proposed allocation for 15 additional trainsets, prompting both agencies to appeal to the Senate to restore the funding.

The railway currently operates 10 trainsets, each capable of carrying approximately 1,600 passengers, against a peak-hour requirement of 12 to 15 trains to ease congestion.

Cabrera said the existing trains are about 25 years old and increasingly prone to breakdowns, with two to three units sometimes unavailable for service.
